dgj155 Passivhouse-Refurbishment in Bonn, D, 2011 The refurbishment of existing buildings is not a purely technical problem. It is all about to transform the existing building and to create a contemporary space that meets the expectations of a modern standards. The tightness of the existing building and the resulting lack of spatial structure was a special challenge. The old working class apartment building has been to extensive remodeling by Drexler Guinand Jauslin architects. It was consistently transformed in terms of energy, functional and design and tob e adaptable to current and future requirements. Still components of the building structure worth protecting - such as the old wooden stairs – were preserved and integrated into the design. To project scope included reconstruction and extension of the main building, the redesign of courtyard and outdoors and the conversion of existing workshop into a studio artist. The structure of the building has been adapted for new use: From the small-scale, confined spaces were a generous living space, which meets today's requirements and can be used long term for future housing. Courtyard buildings from the sixties have been torn down, straightened the facade and extends the living space. This living room extension and the insulation of the facade created by a prefabricated timber, which had advantages for the construction and the precision of the structure. The House on Mechenstraße in Bonn were not only designed new space, the outward appearance has changed and adapted to the new use. The facade was redesigned and insulated. The opening is designed to reflect the use of the rooms and the solar gains. On the south-west garden facade solar gains lead to a the facade design with large windows. On the street side, there are private rooms and the facade was designed with smaller windows. The building was modernized in passive house standard for existing buildings (Ener-PHIT). The building envelope was insulated around the edges and reduces the heating requirements on 25kWh/qm * a. To reduce ventilation losses to increase the comfort and to prevent the building physical problems, a controlled ventilation has been installed. The ventilation ducts were integrated into the insulating layer of the facade, to minimize the structural interventions in the building fabric. The installed building services include a heatpump with by two 65-meter-deep holes, a solar thermal system on the roof, and a water recycling system.
